The European Union is tightening its grip on cryptocurrency transactions, signaling the end of anonymous crypto dealings in the region. Eurogroup President Paschal Donohoe announced at the European Anti-Financial Crime Summit 2025 in Dublin that the EU plans to enforce traditional finance-style oversight on crypto asset service providers (CASPs).

The proposed legislation, termed a ’reclass of performance transfer mechanisms,’ will mandate CASPs to record detailed data on senders and recipients of funds. This move aligns crypto transactions with the transparency requirements long applied to traditional financial systems.

Regulators are targeting what Donohoe described as the ’black box of crypto,’ aiming to bring unprecedented visibility to digital asset flows across Europe. The measures represent the EU’s most aggressive anti-money laundering push into the cryptocurrency sector to date.
